(South Sudan, SS, North-East Africa)

The Republic of South Sudan is a relatively youthful nation, since this country only officially came into being in 2011, when the former country of Sudan was divided into northern and southern regions. As such, this young 'breakaway' country is experiencing much change as it begins to establish its infrastructure, decide upon its capital city (Juba or Ramciel?) and improve upon its somewhat inadequate network of roads.

When it comes to tourism, South Sudan hasn't yet given this industry a great deal of thought and ongoing periods of conflict do make travelling around the borders quite hazardous at times. Juba is a sensible place to base yourself if you are visiting and this city does come with a reasonable selection of accommodation, much of which lines the White Nile.

South Sudan is sited close to the equator, within the tropics, which means that a significant portion of its overall landscape comprises areas of lush rainforest, while there are also vast expanses of swampland and grassland, where enormous herds of native wildlife can often be spotted roaming around. However, many of the actual national parks are hard to reach and some are even quite off the radar.
