South Sudan Shopping and Districts

(South Sudan, SS, North-East Africa)

Juba is a fast growing city and this fact is reflected in the number of shops that have opened since independence was declared. Shopping opportunities range from browsing traditional local markets to strolling round the city's new air-conditioned supermarket.

Many goods still have to be imported from outside South Sudan, so price tickets can seem high to visitors. That said, it is possible to find pretty much anything you are looking for, from wine and perfume to fresh fruit and consumer goods.

In general, shops in South Sudan are open during the week and on Saturdays, from around 08:00 to 13:00 and from 17:30 to 20:00.

Where to Shop

Juba has several large stores and shopping possibilities. These include JIT, located in Hai Jalaba. This large supermarket stocks everything from cloths and cosmetics to electronic goods and food and wine. The Phenicia Supermarket in Kololo also stocks general grocery goods.

A more traditional way to shop in South Sudan is to visit a local market. Konyo Konyo is Juba's main market. Handily located in the centre of the city, it covers a large area and is a mixture of stalls and small shops. You can get pretty much everything here, including live chickens, vegetables, local medicines, hardware and second-hand clothing.

It is also a good place to pick up locally made baskets and African woodcarvings. Other markets in the city include the Jebel Market. Situated outside the centre, it is not as easy to get to, but a visit is certainly worth the effort.
