South Sudan Maps and Orientation

(South Sudan, SS, North-East Africa)

Named the Republic of South Sudan since its official formation and independence in the early part of July 2011, this country resides within Eastern Africa, where it is entirely landlocked. The country is broadly divided into east and west portions by the White Nile.

A number of different countries border this fledgling nation, with Sudan obviously occupying its northern border. Ethiopia sits to the east, Kenya to the south-east and Uganda to the south. The south-western border is where you will find the sizeable country that is the Democratic Republic of the Congo, while directly to the west is the Central African Republic.

South Sudan is currently divided into a series of three principal regions and these are clearly annotated on most country maps. Bahr el Ghazal occupies the north-western section of the country, with the Greater Upper Nile region being found within South Sudan's north-eastern quadrant. To the south of both Bahr el Ghazal and the Greater Upper Nile is Equatoria, which links the Central African Republic with Uganda and Kenya.
