Port Louis enjoys some of the nicest weather on the planet. Its tropical maritime climate ensures consistently warm and sunny conditions throughout the year, with only a little variation in temperature. Steady sea breezes blow across the island all year, but are particularly noticeable along the eastern coast. This helps keep the tropical climate refreshingly cool.

There are, in fact, two seasons in Port Louis, though they are opposite from those in the northern hemisphere. The climate is hottest during the Mauritian summer months - from November through April, with daytime temperatures ranging from 25°C / 77°F to 33°C / 91°F. This is also the rainy season, when the humidity in Port Louis reaches its highest levels. Precipitation can be rather heavy between January and March, which also happens to be the peak of the cyclone season in the Indian Ocean. Average rainfall during the summer is 212 mm / 8.3 inches.

Seasonal Climate Variations / When to Go

During the winter months of May through October you can expect drier, slightly cooler weather. In Port Louis the temperature drops a few degrees and is generally very pleasant. However, head inland to the Central Plateau region and you will notice a discernible cooling trend. On the plateau, daytime temperatures average 20°C / 68°F each August and 26°C / 79°F in February. You can also expect the interior of the island to be rainier than the coastal areas.

The ideal time to visit Mauritius is between May and October. July is the coolest month of the year, with temperatures averaging a perfect 21°C / 70°F on the coast and slightly cooler inland. Since these months coincide with the main holiday season in the northern hemisphere, you can expect crowded conditions. Hotel rates are also higher during these months, but many visitors feel it is worth it to experience such ideal climate conditions.
