Madison Maps and Orientation
(Madison, Wisconsin - WI, USA)
The US state of Wisconsin lies on the northeastern side of North America, with its capital city being Madison. However, with a population of roughly 240,000 people, the city of Madison is actually Wisconsin's second-largest city, being rather dwarfed by Milwaukee with its population now in the region of 600,000.
Madison also functions as the county seat for Dane County and is located on a relatively narrow strip of land, in between Lake Monona and Lake Mendota, and next to both Lake Waubesa and Lake Kegonsa, all of which are connected by the Yahara River. Due to all of this water, the city is often referred to as the 'City of Four Lakes', although Lake Wingra, in the city proper, is generally overlooked and does actually make it five, rather than four.
Officially incorporated in 1848, the city has gradually expanded its boundaries over the years, swallowing up surrounding suburbs. This has created a series of neighborhoods, with the most easterly being amongst the most historic.
Maps and Orientation of the City
Much of central and western Madison is somewhat dominated by the vast campus of the University of Wisconsin, which is an easy landmark to find on maps.
The towering white dome topping the Wisconsin State Capitol Building is another useful point of reference. The Capitol stands on the eastern side of downtown Madison and is the centerpiece of a green leafy square, bounded by Carroll Street, Main Street, Mifflin Street and Pinckney Street.
