Bismarck Shopping and Districts

(Bismarck, North Dakota - ND, USA)

If you are planning a shopping expedition in Bismarck, then you will most likely be paying a visit to one of the city's retail malls. These include both the centrally located Kirkwood Plaza Shopping Center and the Gateway Fashion Mall, which is to be found on the northern side of the city, standing across Interstate I-94 and on State Street.

In recent years, northern Bismarck has enjoyed much commercial activity, thanks not only to the presence of the Gateway Mall, but also the Arrowhead Plaza and the Northbrook Shopping Center on North Kavaney Drive.

The Pinehurst Square Center also deserves a visit and resides in northwestern Bismarck, where it opened in 2006 and was the biggest construction development in the capital for almost four decades. This 'power mall' is anchored by a number of major retails stores, such as Best Buy, Kohls, Old Navy and TJ Maxx, as well as many familiar chain restaurants.

Where to Shop

Those coming to the Kirkwood Mall will find this expansive shopping center situated close to 7th Street and the Bismarck Expressway (Interstate I-194).

Formerly known as the Kirkwood Plaza, this mall opened in 1970 and is the state's second-largest, with close to 100 stores onsite. These include Herberger's, JC Penney, Scheels, Target and Victoria's Secret, along with numerous eateries such as Arby's, Bob's Pizza Plus and Grizzly's Grill. Many shops line the mall's surrounding streets, including South 3rd Street, East Bowen Avenue, East Front Avenue, East Main Avenue and South Washington Street.

Opened at the end of the 1970s, the Gateway Fashion Mall is an indoor shopping center with just over 30 stores, such as Gold Times, Hancock Fabrics, Paradiso, Perkins, Sears and World of Kitchen, amongst others.

Bismarck is also home to a couple of Walmart supermarkets, suiting those who are shopping for groceries or planning a picnic. These are located on southerly Rock Island Place (off the East Bismarck Expressway) and the Skyline Boulevard, on the northern outskirts of the capital.

Further grocery shopping opportunities in Bismarck come in the form of the Central Market (The Fresh Place) on West Turnpike Avenue, on the northwestern side of the city. This store features various departments, such as a bakery, deli and pharmacy.
