Since Helena is far from being a metropolis of a state capital, it would be unfair to expect the dining scene to be anything special. However, there are actually more restaurants spread around the city than you would imagine possible, considering its compact nature.

A number of popular restaurants and eateries line Euclid Avenue, which lies on the western side of downtown Helena and leads onto Lyndale Avenue. Slightly to the south and close to Fire Tower Park is the biggest selection of eateries, with various dining establishments being located along roads such as 6th Avenue, Cruse Avenue, Hibbard Way, North Jackson Street and South Park Avenue, as well as Broadway Street and the famously named Last Chance Gulch Street.

Where to Eat

Also located in this part of Helena, on Last Chance Gulch Street, is Bert and Ernie's Dining Saloon and Grill, a popular local restaurant that was established in the 1970s and offers casual dining, great American-style dishes and an assortment of Montana-brewed beers.

Just a stroll away and offering some hearty Irish dishes is Riley's Irish Pub on West 6th Avenue, where lamb stew, fish and chips, shepherd's pie, burgers and tasty sandwiches are all sure to satisfy even the biggest of hunger pangs. And of course, real Irish ale is on hand to quench your thirst.

If you are shopping in downtown Helena and simply feel like a coffee or a light snack, then pay a visit to the Fire Tower Coffee House, also on Last Chance Gulch Street. Here you will find burritos and various freshly made sandwiches, while on Friday nights, live music is also on the dining menu.

Based in downtown Helena and part of the Great Northern Town Center development is the Silver Star Steak Company Restaurant, which stands on the Great Northern Boulevard and is known for its Angus beef steaks, clam chowder and nachos, battered Alaskan halibut sandwiches and Buffalo chicken salads.

On Euclid Avenue, dining venues worth looking out for include Hardee's Restaurant (burgers and battered chicken), the Chinese Kitchen (takeaway oriental food) and Pizza Hut (pizzas, pasta dishes and salads). Helena's very own Montana Nugget Casino also stands on Euclid Avenue, where it combines gambling and basic dining.
