The downtown district of Santa Ana is home to a real assortment of different buildings and architectural styles, including several of the city's most noteworthy and obvious landmarks, both old and new. Particularly notable here is the Old Santa Ana Hall, which dates back to the middle of the 1930s and boasts a distinctive Art Deco facade.

Forming the very core of the city, the downtown district is a good place to begin your explorations, being home to the complex that is the Civic Center. Acting as the centerpiece to the government of Orange County, the Santa Ana Civic Center Plaza is where you will discover many important city offices, sites and attractions, such as the Federal and Superior courts, and the law and public libraries, as well as the city and county jails.

The Old Orange County Courthouse is another very eye-catching building standing within the city's Downtown National Register District, where it ranks as an official California Historical Landmark and also makes an appearance on the National Register of Historic Places. Along with its upstairs courtrooms, the courthouse now functions as a museum-type attraction (downstairs) and is often used by locals as a venue for weddings.


The Civic Center Plaza is where you will find the Alex Odeh Memorial, the city's Japanese Garden, the Plaza of the Flags and the Santa Ana Stadium (Eddie West Field).

Close by, the downtown Santora Building on North Broadway is likely to be of interest to visitors. The Santora boasts a Spanish Colonial Revival style facade and was built here in the late 1920s. Today, this listed historic landmark building serves as a home to a mixture of shops, galleries and eateries, and has long been a stop-off on the Santa Ana Art Walk (held on the first Saturday each month). Friday and Saturday night evenings tend to be a particularly good time to visit, when all the galleries are open and the atmosphere is especially lively and inviting.
