A city known for its relaxed atmosphere and cultural vibe, Long Beach contains numerous important art galleries and noteworthy museums. Street art is also very much apparent in the city, much of which is the result of the Mural and Cultural Arts Program.

For those looking to spend an afternoon appreciating some fine art, the Long Beach Museum of Art is most certainly the place to come. Located on the East Ocean Boulevard, close to the beachfront and the Valparaiso Plaza, this leading cultural draw card was established in the year 1950 and is managed by the Long Beach Museum of Art Foundation. The gallery is to be found occupying a grand historic residence once owned by affluent local philanthropist Elizabeth Milbank Anderson and currently features some 3,000 paintings, sculptures, drawings and other art works.

Standing just down the road from the Franklin Middle School is the Museum of Latin American Art on Alamitos Avenue, which is often abbreviated to simply the MOLAA. This is actually the only gallery of its kind in Western America to be solely dedicated to Latin American art. Since its founding here in 1996, the MOLAA has more than doubled its exhibition space through a series of expansions, and now also boasts its very own sculpture garden.


The Museum of Latin American Art is situated within the trendy downtown East Village Arts District, where various other art galleries stand and regularly host art openings, particularly during the monthly Artwalk celebrations.

At the University Art Museum on the North Bellflower Boulevard, innovative programs and contemporary canvasses can be expected. This high quality gallery resides within the grounds of the California State University, Long Beach, being found at the North Campus Center. The state university proudly boasts the accolade of being home to the biggest art school that is publicly funded on this side of the Mississippi River.
