Bakersfield Maps and Orientation

(Bakersfield, California - CA, USA)

Located on the southern side of California, part-way between Santa Barbara and Ridgecrest, the city of Bakersfield is to be found alongside the southerly portion of the San Joaquin Valley. Los Angeles resides roughly two hours to the south, while the city of Fresno is a similar distance away and to the north. To the east is the southern tip of the famous mountain range of the Sierra Nevada.

Bakersfield lies within the county of Kern, where it serves as the county seat and is currently the ninth-biggest of all the cities within the state of California. This is amongst the fastest expanding cities within the whole of America, with its metropolitan area now featuring a population exceeding 500,000 people.

If you are planning to use Bakersfield as a base to tour this part of California, perhaps with a rental car, then maps or sat-nav will be essential. The Golden State Highway heads north to south and passes through the western side of the city, with both highways CA-58 and CA-178 leading eastwards, to Caliente and the Kern River Preserve respectively.

Maps and Orientation of the City

Historically, the city has named its different regions according to their location and direction, namely Central, East, North, Northeast, South, Southeast and Southwest Bakersfield. All of these regions extend right to the very city limits.

East Bakersfield comprises the former city of Kern, which is now part of the city and comes with its own Central Business District (CBD). Central Bakersfield is effectively the downtown district and occupies the heart of the city, meaning that it is easily accessible from all of the other regions. Specific districts within the Central region include the Arts District, the Buck Owens Boulevard, the Civic Center, the Education District, Mill Creek and Westchester.
