One of the most famous local artists in Guadalajara is Sergio Bustamante, who has brought much to the city in the way of art and the Sergio Bustamante Gallery itself is famous for his large papier maché sculptures.

Other prominent art galleries within Guadalajara include both the Casa Museo José Clemente Orozco and the Instituto de la Artesania Jalisciense, where murals, glassworks and ceramics can all be enjoyed and often purchased.


Casa Museo José Clemente Orozco

The highly acclaimed tapatio painter José Clemente Orozco actually lived in this property during the 1940s. Known for his large murals and art works. As well as a number of José's personal items, this museum also displays an number of photographs, paintings and one of his much-loved murals.

The Galeria Sergio Bustamante is an unusual and appealing gallery, located within the heart of the nearby Tlaquepaque area, close to Guadalajara. Surrounded by attractive gardens, highlights within the museum include the many outstanding sculptures, created entirely from papier maché, beautiful pieces of jewellery and ornate pieces of pottery. This is a great place to purchase something a little different, which is sure to become a major talking point.

The Ex Convento del Carmen is a particularly attractive building and has been rebuilt over the years, following considerable damage. This landmark is now a notable cultural centre in the heart of Guadalajara and regularly hosts a range of events, including theatrical performances, classical music concerts and dancing, so be sure to check on their calendar in case there is something of interest during your stay.

Instituto de la Artesania Jalisciense

The Instituto de la Artesania Jalisciense has long been a popular attraction within Guadalajara and can be found in the Parque Agua Azul. Actively promoting local arts and crafts produced within the Jalisco region, this gallery contains an array of interesting exhibits, most of which are available for purchase and make for unusual souvenirs of your visit. Look out for the hand-blown glassworks, colourful pottery, silverware, papier maché creations and traditional beaded yarn paintings by the Huichol Indians.

Situated in downtown Guadalajara and built some 200 years ago, the Instituto Cultural de Cabañas is an important cultural centre and was once used as an orphanage. In total the landmark boasts more than 100 different rooms and also over 20 patios areas, where regular art exhibitions often take place. Other highlights include some striking murals in the main chapel, a wealth of colourful flowers in the gardens and courtyards, ballet performances on Wednesday evenings, a souvenir store, and also attractions suitable for children.

MAZ - Museo de Arte de Zapopan

The Museo de Arte de Zapopan, frequently referred to as MAZ, displays contemporary artworks within a modern facility. The gallery also runs workshops for adults to partake in.
