Guatemala City Art Galleries

(Guatemala City, Central Highlands, Guatemala)

A city with plenty of museums, Guatemala City is slightly lacking when it comes to official art galleries. One of the best selections of galleries is to be found within the Zona Viva, along the Avenida la Reforma, where there is also an array of artisan shops, eateries, bars and clubs.

For original pieces at realistic prices, the daily Craft Market (Mercado de Artesanias) will often oblige, being located on the corner of Calle 5a and the Avenida 11a.

The Museo Nacional de Arte Moderno serves as the city's principal gallery and showcases a mixture of 20th-century contemporary art from all over the country. Many renowned Guatemalan artists have their paintings and sculptures exhibited here.

The intriguing Museum of Modern Art is without question the most fun gallery in town. Although the word, 'modern' is quite broadly defined here - in that the facility covers art right back to the 1800s, there are many quality contemporary works too. They include caricatures, sculptures and avant-garde paintings galore by national artists including the likes of Carlos Merida (1891 to 1984), Carlos Mauricio Valenti Perrillat (1888 to 1912) and Humberto Garavito (1897 to 1970). Next door, the Museo Nacional de Etnologia y Arqueologia is worth popping into if you have left yourself enough time.
Open hours: Tuesday to Friday - 09:00 to 16:00, Saturday and Sunday - 09:00 to 12:00, 14:00 to 16:00
