A busy city with so much to see and enjoy, Lisbon is home to an efficient public transport network. Buses, electric trams (electricos / street cars) and underground subway trains are the main choice and mean that you can travel all over Lisbon without burning a hole in your pocket.
Public transport in Portugal's capital city is fast, convenient and cheap. However, if you are lucky enough to be staying in a centrally located hotel, then the very best way to travel around much of Lisbon city centre and the districts of Baixa and the Barrio Alto, is simply to walk.

Portela Airport is situated extremely close to the centre of Lisbon and is a mere 7 km / 4 miles away, lying directly to the north. Currently Portugal's busiest airport, each year annual passenger figures exceed 14 million and this is expected to rise even further, with the region continuing to be a major European holiday destination. The cheapest way to travel into central Lisbon is by using bus transport, operated by both Carris and Aerobus. Shuttle buses are also available and travel to a number of destinations in this part of Portugal, such as Cascais and Estoril.

Car Rental
Many visitors flying into Portela Airport choose to rent a car to travel to their hotel. Whilst this can be an extremely convenient mode of transport, if you need to drive around central Lisbon, do be prepared for considerable traffic congestion and very limited parking. However, if you intend to travel outside of the city and visit the many nearby beach resorts, such as Almada, Cascais and Estoril, then a car is highly suited to your needs and the freedom provided is unsurpassed.
Buses and Trams
Operated by Portugal's Carris transport company, the network of buses and trams in Lisbon is extremely popular with visitors to this capital city.
Rechargable '7 Colinas' cards can be used on both buses and trams, and also on the subway trains, and can remain valid for multiple days if required, offering the best value for money.
Metro
Recently modernised and fully updated, the metro trains in Lisbon are a pleasure to use. Zoned tickets provide good value for money and all-day passes can also be used on all tram and bus transport in the city. Metro trains connect much of the city and allow you to travel to your destination quickly and inexpensively.
Taxis
Taxi transport is Lisbon is usually quite plentiful and relatively affordable. All of the newest taxis are beige in colour and easy to spot by their illuminated 'taxi' signs on the roof. A number of taxi ranks reside within the city centre, around the westerly Rossio area and also at the Sul e Sueste ferry dock.
