Lisbon Hotels and Accommodation

(Lisbon, Portugal)

Picture showing the beachfrontWherever you are in central Lisbon, you can be sure that you are never far away from plenty of hotels. Accommodation in Lisbon is generally well placed and close to shops, monuments and the many sights, with hotels also often being just a short walk away from traditional Portuguese restaurants.

There are also a surprising number of unlisted youth hostels dotted around Lisbon, where double rooms are available for just a small price. Those arriving at the city's Portela Airport without anywhere to stay will be able to take advantage of the accommodation booking service at the onsite tourist centre.

Where to Stay

One of the Lisbon's most appealing districts is Bairro Alto, where hotels are close to the action and a buzzing nightlife scene. Accommodation around Bairro Alto can be found along the Rua Garret and the Rua da Gloria. There is also a popular youth hostel (Lisbon Youth Hostel / Pousada da Juventude) situated along the Rua Andrade Corvo, near to the tube stations and within easy reach of the main stadiums.

Many other hotels in Lisbon are to be found around the beautiful Baixa district and its enormous public square, the Praça do Comércio. The best accommodation here overlooks the wide Tagus River, where you can enjoy views of the many boats sailing by. One such hotel is the boutique-style Bairro Alto on the Praça Luis de Camoes, although you will usually have to pay extra for the most impressive panoramas.

There is also good upmarket accommodation and luxury hotels in the stylish Lapa area of Lisbon, such as the magnificent Lapa Palace along the Rua do Pau de Bandeira. This historical building is well known in Lisbon and was converted into a hotel fairly recently, in the early 1990s.

Those looking for beachfront resorts will need to stay outside of Lisbon and look for hotels along the coastline, and in particular, in the suburb of Cascais. Around 30 km / 19 miles from the city, the main accommodation here is close to the westerly Guincho Beach and the Sintra Mountains.
