Picture of a Lisbon street car known as Elevador da BicaThe largest air facility in Portugal is the Lisbon Portela Airport, located just a few kilometres to the north of the nation's capital city. Each year, more than 14 million people pass through its gates, which have been operating for more than 60 years. Originally, the airport was opened during WWII, but immediately after the war commercial flights to France and other European nations began to operate.

There are two terminals functioning at Lisbon's air facility. Terminal 1, formerly known as the Main Terminal, mostly accommodates international flights serviced by national carriers. Terminal 2 is primarily a domestic terminal, but also handles some low-cost international flights. Two runways, one almost 4 km / 2.5 miles in length, are located to the north-east of the terminals.

Several airlines use the facility as a European hub, including EasyJet, SATA International, TAP Portugal, White Airways and Luzair. TAP Portugal is by far the airport's busiest airline, following EasyJet.

Cars

This airport is one of the largest in the world that still stands within the centre of a city. This means that travelling from the gates to the city centre is both quick and easy. Take the A1, or alternatively, drivers can head directly into the heart of Lisbon along the busy Avenida Almirante Gago Coutinho.

Buses

Buses are a reliable and cheap transportation method from the airport. Aerobus is the main option for shuttle bus services, offering three routes that link to different parts of the city. Aerobus 1 travels into the heart of Lisbon every 20 minutes or thereabouts. Bus 44 of the public bus system takes passengers to the railway station, giving easy access to downtown Lisbon.

Taxis

It is recommended that visitors purchase a taxi-voucher from the airport. This enables passengers to go almost anywhere in the city without having to worry about paying the fare to the driver. Of note, taxis are found outside the Arrivals halls.

Visitors should be wary when dealing directly with local taxi drivers. Knowing a little Portuguese will help alleviate most issues.
