Faro Airport (FAO) Information
(Faro, Algarve, Portugal)
At the centre of Portugal's sunny Algarve region is the city of Faro. The main gateway into the city is Faro Airport, which stands as the most important air hub in the southern reaches of Portugal. The region sees a massive influx of tourists during the summer months, when passenger numbers at the airport increase spectacularly. Altogether, more than 5.5 million passengers pass through this air gateway each year.
There is only one terminal serving the facility. In addition, there is only one runway, measuring about 2,500 metres / 8,200 feet in length. The airport is located to the west of Faro city centre and is easily accessed from many other towns along the Algarve coast, such as
Albufeira, Olhao and Quarteira.
Most flights into the city are operated by low-cost airlines, in particular Ryanair, Thomas Cook Airlines, Thomson Airways and EasyJet. Travellers from all over Europe and the United Kingdom come to the Algarve in the warmer months of the year.

The airport is only a short distance from the heart of Algarve's capital, and taking the N-125 is the best option for accessing this destination. However, to visit other cities and towns along the Algarve's coastline, drive along the modern A22 or the older N-125 east or west. Some of the main towns in close proximity include Albufeira, Quarteira and Portimao.
Buses
It is recommended that travellers head into the city before exploring the Algarve. You can do this by catching the EVA Bus between 05:00 and 23:15. Buses leave the airport's terminal at different intervals, usually between 30 minutes and 60 minutes apart. From Faro city centre, the Algarve region can be explored using the local bus service.
Taxis
If you feel more comfortable in a taxi than a bus or a private car, then you should head to the exit of the Arrivals zone. A taxi rank is sited just outside the door and is a great option for tourists, visitors and executives alike heading to Faro or the many other cities and settlements around the Algarve.
