Lake Garda

North-west of nearby Verona is Lake Garda, Italy's biggest lake and a very popular holiday destination. Whilst the southern coastline of the lake can be busy during the peak summer months, the surrounding hills and mountains are more tranquil, particularly at its northern end. These offer visitors an opportunity to take in some wonderful scenery. If water sports and related attractions are of more interest, these are available at any number of lakeside towns.

Vicenza

Some 61 km / 38 miles from Verona, nearby Vicenza is an excellent to sightsee in peace. This is partly thanks to its pedestrianised centre, which gives visitors both time and space to admire the beautiful Renaissance architecture and period attractions on show. Indeed, the town has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Head out to the nearby hills, and it's also possible to enjoy a panoramic view of the town.

Brescia

Brescia may at first sight appear to be a very modern city, with little to interest the day tripper. However, on closer inspection, this industrial city also offers a host of interesting attractions, including a castle, medieval piazzas and Roman remains. Perhaps its most popular landmark is the Palazzo della Logia.

Mantova

About 35 km / 21 miles from Verona, Mantova boasts a small, but beautiful medieval town centre. Surrounded almost completely by water, Mantova is an attractive city with many historical attractions and a rich heritage, which dates back as far as prehistoric times.

Negrar

Just to the north of Verona is a wine-connoisseur's paradise - the valley of Valpolicella. Its Recioto, Ripasso and Amarone wines are just some of this area's attractions. At the heart of the valley is Negrar, known as the 'city of wine', and a mere 12 km / 8 mile journey from Verona. As well as offering plenty of atmosphere, this has to be the perfect place to sample a glass of the local vintage, either at one of the tastings on offer or as accompaniment to a meal in a local restaurant.
