Photo of sculpture display on the Aristotelous SquareThe city of Thessaloniki hosts a number of popular festivals and trade fairs, during the year, with some of the biggest taking place in September and October at the HelExpo. These include the Thessaloniki International Trade Fair, which is accompanies by a series of cultural events, including live music, film festivals and more, followed by various celebrations on St. Dimitrios Day / Feast Day of St. Demetrius (October 26th) and soon after, Ohi Day (October 28th).

Holiday makers visiting this Greek city will always find things to do, but it is well worth checking to see if any big events are being staged during your stay. From February until April, the Thessaloniki International Festival of Photography is a well-supported event, with a number of different photography exhibitions held at some of the city's museums and galleries.

Thessaloniki Calendar of Festivals and Events 2014 / 2015

During the middle of March, the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival may well be of interest, and is amongst the most noteworthy of its kind across Greece. The very established International Film Festival in November dates back to 1992 and is one such event which is always extremely popular, with some 150 different films of all descriptions being staged at various central venues.

Towards the latter part of May, the Anastenaria Firewalking Festival is something quite entertaining, while the end of May sees the arrival of the Thessaloniki Book Fair, held over a four day period and attracting crowds of thousands. In June, look out for seasonal events related to the performing arts at the Moni Lazariston complex.

Sports fans in Thessaloniki will find plenty on offer to choose from, such as basketballs games at the city's Alexandreio Melathron, while for soccer, a number of different stadiums are available, such as the Kaftanzoglio, the Kleanthis Vikelides and the Toumba.
