Fine collections by famous masters can be found at the Hamburg Kunsthalle und Galerie der Gegenwart (Art Hall and Contemporary Gallery), as well as at smaller privately owned galleries.

Particularly notable are the numerous art-related exhibitions and small arty museums, which are to be found along the 'Art Mile', a stretch known locally in Hamburg as the 'Kunstmeile' and sited between the Deichtorstrasse and the Glockengiesserwall. The main art galleries are listed below.

This privately owned gallery focuses mostly on contemporary and modern artworks. Though also exhibiting local artists, most of the exhibitions at the Hamburg Art Hall and Contemporary Gallery come from European talents. Apart from paintings in different forms and styles, there are also other means of artistic expression, including photography, video and sculpture. Abstract and minimalist works are preferred choices here, which interrelate with the gallery's Spartan rooms.

Art Hall and Contemporary Gallery (Kunsthalle und Galerie der Gegenwart)

If checking out masterworks by revered painters such as Munch, Liebermann and Rembrandt sounds like something you will enjoy, the permanent features of this exhibition are bound to delight you. Known locally in Hamburg as the Kunsthalle und Galerie der Gegenwart, the city's Art Hall and Contemporary Gallery is split into several themed areas. The section displaying modern works includes names such as Beckmann and Kokoschkadominate, and is regarded as one of Germany's most significant collections. The Kunsthalle opened its doors around 150 years ago and added a modern art gallery only relatively recently, at the end of the 20th century.

Erotic Art Museum

Located within the rather colourful district of St. Pauli, the Erotic Art Museum is right at home in this area and was established in the early 1990s. Expect the see many erotic paintings, drawings and prints, together with objects of interest and even some art works from as early as the 1700s. Various temporary exhibitions take place here throughout the calendar.

Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe (Museum for Decorative Arts and Crafts)

One of the most historic museums in the whole of Hamburg, the Museum for Decorative Arts and Crafts (Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe) dates back almost 150 years. Home to a large and impressive collection of paintings, sculptures, ceramics, textiles, jewellery and antiquities, this notable gallery also houses a number of interesting Egyptian artefacts and further themed exhibits.
