Close to Lyon, the nearby towns and villages of Viennes, St. Romain-en-Gal and Crémieu boast plenty of noteworthy attractions, including museums, historic buildings and ancient monuments
In addition, scenic destinations such as the Monts du Lyonnais make for an enjoyable day out.
Crémieu
A popular day-trip for visitors to Lyon, nearby Crémieu boasts a number of attractions. Its many fine historic buildings include Crémieu's medieval city gates, 15th-century market, and the ruined château, which once belonged to the Dauphiné region's rulers.
Vienne
In its heyday, the nearby small town of Vienne was a real centre of commercial activity. Today, the town attracts makes a pleasant place to sightsee with its Roman monuments, medieval buildings and narrow, rambling streets. Every July, thousand of music-lovers are drawn to the town's internationally-renowned jazz festival.
Pérouges
Pérouges is a beautifully preserved medieval village, about 29 km /18 miles north-east of Lyon. Its concentration of historic buildings, narrow cobbled streets and ancient ruined attractions make it a particularly appealing tourist destination. The village has also become a popular setting for film-makers.
Monts du Lyonnais
Nearby to Lyon, these mountains offer peace, quiet and some pretty, unspoilt villages. Just south-west of the city, the area's easy accessibility, combined with a number of parks and museums, make it an attractive place to visit.
St. Romain-en-Gal
Visitors interested in Roman history won't fail to be fascinated by this ancient town. As in nearby Lyon, excavations have revealed a number of significant Roman finds and attractions over the years. Its impressive Musée Archéologique de St. Romain-en-Gal is just one of the town's many highlights.
