Vienna International Airport (VIE) Information

(Vienna / Wien, Austria)

Vienna International Airport is the busiest in the entire country, serving Austria's capital from cities across Europe and the world. Known as Schwechat by locals on account of its locale, the modern, tri-terminal facility is the hub of national carrier Austrian Airlines and harks back to the late 1930s.

The airport is located to the south-east of Vienna and is well connected by road, for those using car hire. It has a couple of runways which are able to accommodate big aircraft, such as Boeing 747s and 777s, as well as Airbus A380s, and has a yearly passenger throughput of over 20 million.

Most major flag airlines and budget European carriers, as well as many overseas carriers, serve Vienna International Airport. Flights are frequent, facilities are excellent and land transport is comprehensive.

The AirportLines Bus offers one-way and return fares to Vienna International Airport. It stops at various places around the capital, including the city centre, and runs from 05:00 until midnight. Well-known hotels often provide hotel shuttle buses for guests.

Trains

There are two rail options to Vienna - the dedicated City Airport Train and the S-Bahn commuter service. Both services depart from beneath the airport and both run to the Wien Mitte railway station, with the S-Bahn also making a stop at the Wien Nord (Wien Praterstern) station. The latter service connects with Vienna's underground U-Bahn system. The City Airport Train departs twice-hourly and takes roughly 15 minutes, while the S-Bahn is less frequent and slower, but is the cheaper of these two services.

Taxis and Limos

Taxis come with either a fixed or flat fare, with both being quite expensive. Several companies run from Vienna International Airport's Arrivals area, including Airport Service Wien and Rosenov Airport Transfers. Limousines can be pre-booked with Radio Car Vienna.
