Ho Chi Minh City Weather, When to Go and Climate Information

With its subtropical latitude and proximity to the sea, Ho Chi Minh City experiences a reliably hot climate all year long. The most uncomfortable period is during the rainy season, between May and November. The regular bursts of precipitation boost the humidity levels to near saturation, so be prepared to sweat it out during these climate extremes.

In June, July and August the rains hit their peak. Thankfully, the showers are sudden and brief, allowing the sun to pop back out shortly after the downpour. It is the sun, however, that evaporates the rain and turns Ho Chi Minh City into something of a steam bath. From July to November, the city is at sporadic risk of typhoons, so keep an eye on the weather forecast if travelling during these months.

Seasonal Climate Variations / When to Go

The climate between December and April is somewhat less hot than during the summer months. This is the dry season, when temperatures drop slightly to an average of 28°C / 82°F. Compared to the potential highs of 40°C / 104°F in April, it is easy to see why visitors try to plan their trip during the winter. The lack of steady precipitation also keeps the humidity level down to around 75 percent.

A good time to visit Ho Chi Minh City is right after the rains have dissipated, in early December. The New Year period, around the end of December through to early February (when the Vietnamese New Year kicks in), is a busy time in the city. But again, by late February, things have quieted down. Of course, the rainy season also brings fewer crowds, as well as favourable deals on hotels, if you can handle a little heat and humidity.
