Gentleman, this is the war room
My father served in the Vietnam War so I was naturally drawn to the War Remnants Museum. There are plenty of informative exhibits. The only complaint I would have is that it is a little biased but that's to be expected, I suppose. Recommended to both die-hard and casual historians.

High up in Ho Chi Minh
I wanted to get the best views of Ho Chi Minh City, which is why I headed to the Bitexco Financial Tower in the centre of the business district. This is not be missed, even though it is a little expensive. Great views of both the river and the city.

Re. Fun but please plan ahead
If the show in the city is sold or you fancy taking in more than one, check out the water puppet performance at Thai Dien Village. It is over five miles from Ho Chi Minh city centre but still really easy to get to. I tried both shows and prefer the one I am recommending to you now.

Fun but please plan ahead
The Golden Dragon Water Puppet Theatre was one of the main highlights of Ho Chi Minh for me. Please plan as far ahead as possible so that you won't miss out. If you have booked ahead, you can pick up your tickets on the day. It is only a couple of miles from the CBD, so not too much of an effort to have to visit twice on the same day. I won't say too much about the show, but it was thoroughly entertaining.

Other worldly
A visit to the Cao Dai Temple was my favourite of the excursions I embarked upon in Vietnam. I really did feel as though I was in a different world, which was just what I wanted from the experience. There are numerous tuk-tuk and taxi drivers offering day trips to and from the site.
