Kuching Weather, When to Go and Climate Information

Located inland from the coastline and on the banks of the Sarawak River, Kuching has a tropical rainforest climate, a self-explanatory description for year-round hot, humid and wet weather. In regions with this classification, rainfall is high and occurs on average for two-thirds of the year. Kuching is the wettest city in Malaysia, with average annual rainfall levels of some 4,200 mm / 165 inches and around 250 days of rain annually. Daily rains do occur, usually in short bursts with a totally tropical flavour, and in the monsoon season the downpours - often accompanied by spectacular storms, go on for hours and occasionally even days!

During most of the year, the average sunshine hours per day total five, with less in January during the November to February / March North-East Monsoon. Temperatures range from 19°C / 66°F to a high of around 35°C / 95°F, but due to the high humidity, the heat index can easily top 42°C / 108°F. Rainfall brings little cooling relief, except occasionally in the early hours of the morning.

Seasonal Climate Variations / When to Go

Temperatures here remain constant year-round with almost no seasonal variation, and may rise even higher due to the annual mid-year haze caused by airborne pollution from open burning of agricultural waste in Indonesia. As a result, this time of year is not the best for a visit, as not only are views affected, but the pollution can be very unpleasant. The monsoon season, from November to February, sees even heavier and more long-lasting rains, and very little in the way of sun.

Rainwear, waterproof footwear and an umbrella are all essential for a visit here, particularly if you plan to explore the countryside or indulge in adventure activities, and mosquito repellent is also advisable. Perhaps the best times to visit for a slightly cooler climate and less drenching weather would be in the shoulder seasons either side of the monsoon and the haze, especially if you are sensitive to airborne particles.
