Borobudur Museums

Close to the actual exit gateway of the Borobudur Park and situated within the monument grounds, the Karmawibhangga Archaeological Museum is really the only attraction of its kind here. Since the admission charge is actually automatically included in the main admission price to the park, it really should not be overlooked.

Many wonderful artefacts and relics originating from the Borobudur Temple are displayed within the museum complex, with some ancient stones set out in an orderly line in the gardens, alongside the Javanese-style pavilion (pendopo). Exhibits inside the museum include detailed information and explanations about the history of this epic Buddhist monument, complete with clear signs written in both English and of course, Indonesian.


Karmawibhangga Archaeological Museum

The Karmawibhangga Archaeological Museum lies just a short distance to the east of the temple itself and is easy to locate. Many fascinating exhibits are housed here, including approximately 4,000 of the original stones and carvings from the temple. These include a huge collection of Buddha statues, in a variety of conditions, including some with no head or arms. There are also a series of photographs documenting the temple's history and restoration work, as well as the bomb damage suffered in 1985.
