Situated on Klein Street, on the city's outskirts and on the far side of Joubert Park, the Johannesburg Art Gallery comes highly recommended and is nothing short of a treasure trove of masterpieces.

The Market Galleries on Wolhuter Street may also be of interest and is conveniently close to a number of excellent restaurants, while the University of the Witwatersrand's very own Wits Galleries is another extremely noteworthy local exhibition space.

Founded in 1910, Johannesburg Art Gallery was the city's very first museum. Its current home in Joubert Park is particularly notable for its famous designer, Sir Edwin Lutyens. The gallery is home to an extensive collection of Flemish and Dutch paintings, as well as those of internationally renowned artists, including Picasso, Pissarro, Monet and Degas. There is also a large South African collection, which in recent years, has been extended with the addition of the work of contemporary South African artists.

The Standard Bank Gallery is a contemporary art museum that has quickly become one of the city's top cultural venues. If you are interested in seeing the best of local art, then the Standard Bank Gallery is sure to deliver. Every year, it holds a competition to find new artistic talent. Within its sleek modern rooms, the gallery also displays international artists' work.

Market Galleries

Wits Galleries

Lying within the Newtown area of the city centre, the Wits Galleries is a notable venue and is affiliated to the Witwatersrand University, contributing greatly to the African arts scene. Works by leading artists are to be found here, within the university's extensive permanent collection of valuable paintings and sculptures.
