If you are a visiting golfer looking to play a round or two, then the following selection are some of the best courses and clubs to be found within the boundaries of the city of Des Moines.

Located on the southern outskirts of the city, the A. H. Blank Golf Course offers a number of challenges around its 18 holes, including water hazards and plenty of mature trees. However, it is the Uplink Global Positioning System (GPS) that adds another dimension to the game here, since it plots the exact distance between your ball and the actual hole.

Created in 1902, the Grand View Golf Club is amongst the most historic in the state of Iowa and resides on the northeasterly outskirts of Des Moines, between Grandview Park and Fairmount Park. The course is relatively short and therefore lends itself to a quick round.


The Waveland Golf Course, to the west, is even older, being established in 1901, which interestingly makes it the most historic course located on the western side of the Mississippi River. Its 18-hole layout is fairly traditional in structure, although there is a substantial amount of undulation and sloping on many of the fairways. More than 100 years after its creation, the Waveland remains a popular course and sees in excess of 40,000 rounds played each year.
