Springfield Art Galleries

There are a handful of illustrious galleries to be found within the city of Springfield, should you be interested in admiring some fine art or purchasing a painting to take back home with you.

Very much playing a central part in the cultural scene of downtown Springfield is the Hoogland Center for the Arts, which resides on South 6th Street and is just a block away from the Lincoln Home National Historic Site. The center is certainly very hard to miss, with its huge sign on the front of the building making it appear rather like a movie theater.

The Prairie Art Alliance Gallery and School also comes with a healthy endorsement. This not-for-profit organization actively works to promote artists within the local community, with regularly changing exhibitions at both of its local galleries, affordable paintings and sculptures, and pieces available to rent.

The building itself is of historical significance, since it actually used to be the city's Masonic Temple for many years, until it was purchased in 2001 and transformed into its current incarnation, thanks to a generous private donation and funding by Illinois state.

Many local community theater events are staged here, as well as performances by the Illinois Symphony Orchestra, the Springfield Ballet Company and other notable organizations. For art aficionados, there are frequent exhibitions covering all aspects of the visual arts, including the H. D. Smith Gallery - see below.

Prairie Art Alliance Gallery and School

Helpful staff are always on hand to answer any questions that you may have and provide advice when asked. Frequent events are staged at each venue, including composition workshops, painting interpretations, silent auctions and reception evenings. All of the works on display are for sale and often grouped by theme. Of note, the Springfield Area Arts Council contributes to the necessary funding, as do individual members, sponsors and donors.
