San Juan's climate is classified as tropical monsoon, with winds arriving mainly from the south and south-east. Mean temperatures average 27°C / 81°F, with summer highs of over 32°C / 90°F regularly recorded. Winter lows reach around 22°C / 72 km, with the lowest temperature ever recorded being a comfortable 16°C / 61°F, and the highest, recorded in October 1981, a steamy 37°C / 99°F. February and March are the driest months, with less than 2.6 mm / 0.1 inches falling on average. The bulk of the rainy weather distributes itself through the rest of the year and totals 1,290 mm / 51 inches.

The city basks in 3,000 hours of sunshine annually, two-thirds of the possible total hours. The bad news is that Puerto Rico lies right in the tracks of the hurricanes and massive tropical storms, which form in the Pacific Ocean far to the south-east and gather strength as they cross the sea. The hurricane season runs from June through November.

Seasonal Climate Variations / When to Go

Seasonal climate variations and temperature fluctuations don't count for much in San Juan, although a winter visit might mean a light coat or sweater in some evenings. Rainfall and, of course, the likelihood of hurricanes are a more significant influence, dependent on the style of holiday being considered.

A beach holiday is best taken during the winter and early spring, but for those who don't mind getting soaking wet while hiking in the jungle, all year round is good. San Juan's peak holiday season runs December to April, with the drier but still pleasantly hot weather attracting huge numbers of visitors from cooler climes. To avoid the crowds, a summer season holiday is best, but unfortunately hurricanes are not so easily avoided.
