Santiago de Cuba Hotels and Accommodation

(Santiago de Cuba, Cuba)

Visitors to Santiago de Cuba have a good selection of accommodation to choose from, including luxury and resort-style hotels both in the old city and along the beaches. However, for a real Cuban experience, the local equivalent of B&Bs, 'casas particulares', are the best bet when it comes to lodging in the city.

These welcoming local accommodation options can be found all over Santiago de Cuba. A few youth hostels are available, suiting backpackers on a budget, but the lodging on offer in casas particulares is actually quite comparable in price, and more comfortable. Much of the accommodation in Santiago de Cuba is set in traditional buildings with charming décor, and prices are reasonable across the board.

Where to Stay

'Hostal' doesn't always mean 'hostel' and can often refer to any lodging from boutique to beastly. One point worth noting, however, is that even the most upscale hotel will endure the same power cuts as the smallest homestay.

For those needing a slice of luxury as part of their holiday, Santiago de Cuba hotels won't disappoint. The city's newest hotel, the San Basilio on Maso Street, is a good choice, while the impressive Hotel Casa Granda, built in 1914, featured in Graham Greene's novel, 'Our Man in Havana'.

The sparkling Hotel Libertad in the old city is as good as it gets and, for a serious splurge, the Malia Santiago de Cuba just outside the old city is the epitome of upscale luxury accommodation, with its three swimming pools, massive conservatory style lobby and much more.

Staying at a budget casa particular doesn't mean having to travel to see Santiago's cultural attractions, as there is plenty of accommodation of this type either in the old city or right next to the larger and plusher hotels. The best of this category are homestays in the real sense, with welcoming owners and a friendly, caring service. There is a good selection near the beaches and along the coast as well, with terraces and sea views as standard. This is a great way to experience the true treasure of Santiago de Cuba - its people.
