Sicily has a Mediterranean climate that differs from place to place, due to the island's size. It typically gets hotter than mainland Italy - and most of the rest of the European Mediterranean for that matter - and choosing the right time to go based on your weather preferences is a must.

The island of Sicily boasts an especially hot climate on the east coast, particularly in Catania during the height of summer. This is also the busiest and most expensive time to travel to and stay in Sicily, with spring and autumn being much cooler and quieter. It is still quite pleasant during winter, although some hotels, shops, bars and eateries close in the off-season months.

Seasonal Climate Variations / When to Go

April to June is one of the best times to head to Sicily, as it is not overly hot or crowded. September and October are also good, with the climate and concentration of holiday makers being similar to the spring months. These times are especially pleasant if you plan on traipsing around the island's roasting archaeological sites.

If you want it boiling hot and busy, head to Sicily any time between June and August. This is the main tourist season, although visitor numbers rack up even in May and September, when the weather is warm and sunny, without being scorching. Those heading here in July and August (the busiest time anywhere in Europe) should really book hotels and travel as far ahead as possible. For skiing on Mount Etna, November to March is the time to come, although many other attractions may not be open at this time of the year.
