Atkinson Clock Tower
The tower was built in 1902 to honour Francis George Atkinson. It is only a few minutes from the city centre so you can combine this site with a day of exploring the city. The nearby Signal Hill observatory is worth a visit and you have to walk for 10 minutes to get there. The effort was well worth it for the view of the city.

The Green Connection Aquarium
Loved this attraction and it only took 10 minutes to get there by taxi. We got to see sharks, turtles and snakes without going out of this city. The aquarium also makes efforts to preserve Kota Kinabulu's ocean life. If you want to you can feed the fish in a huge tank.

Relaxing Day One - the Beach
We went to Tanjung Aru Beach for a picnic and after a day in the sun the bars were a good spot for a drink at sunset. It took us 10 minutes to reach the beach so we could head back for dinner in the city.

Re. Lok Kawi Wildlife Park
You can take bus 17 from the city to Lok Kawi and the park is not far from there so its cheaper to get a taxi from there rather than the whole way.

Lok Kawi Wildlife Park
Locals call it KK and it attracts tourists from around the world. From the park I could easily reach other sites and national parks. It was difficult to find the right bus to reach the park but I suppose you could also take a taxi which is more expensive unless you have a group to share with. The park focuses on rehabilitating animals and it was incredible to see tigers and elephants up so close. Another one of my favourites was the orang-utans and monkeys - I spent ages watching them play.
