Georgetown Hotels and Accommodation

(Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia)

An impressive selection of lodging is found in Georgetown, ranging from luxury five-star hotels and suite hotels through three and four-star accommodation and guest houses, to a large number of budget choices. As a bonus, much of the accommodation is housed within heritage mansions or charming old Chinese shophouses in the narrow back streets of the colonial district.

For an upscale and luxurious colonial experience, head for the famous Eastern and Oriental Hotel Penang, founded in 1884 and still going strong. Known by wealthy regulars and residents of Georgetown as the E&O, this grand old hotel is on Farquhar Street in the central district, close to the beach, and epitomises the city's colonial history.

Where to Stay

Nearby Gurney Drive is another location where luxury hotels flourish. For a unique lodging experience in Georgetown, try the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion on Leith Street, a fabulous hundred-year old Chinese courtyard house built according to Feng Shui and originally owned by a renowned Chinese self-made millionaire.

A selection of modern chain hotels in Georgetown are found along the Tanjung Bunga, the beach road at the head of the peninsula. Many more of this accommodation type, including the Shangri-La, the Oriental and the Grand Continental hotels are set in the centre at a distance from the beaches, but within walking distance of sights and traditional markets.

For budget accommodation at all levels, from youth hostels to lodges, the outer edge of town and the smaller streets in the downtown area are well worth checking. Again, much of the cheaper accommodation is set in attractive old shophouses.
