(Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, India)

Photo of local stores and wandering cattleThe city of Jaisalmer offers especially good shopping, with many local shops and bazaars featuring a rather spectacular selection of Rajasthani mirrorwork wall hangings. Jaisalmer has also become well known for its beautiful embroideries, along with its colourful rugs and bedspreads.

Those shopping for a souvenir of their time spent in Jaisalmer may like to consider one of the innumerable oil lamps, handbags made from camel leather, antique vases and furniture, and silver pieces. However, do be a little cautious when buying good made of silver, since some is poor quality and at times, the silver is even mixed with bronze.

Where to Shop

Whilst there are a number of good shops within Jaisalmer Fort itself, to find the best value items, you will usually need to head to the shops located outside of the fort itself. There are a number of good 'khadi' shops spread all over the city centre, selling hand-woven cloth, garments and carpets.

The shopping scene in Jaisalmer is also good around stretches such as the Dhibba, the Gandhi Chowk, and the Taloti Vyaspara, so of which even sell personalised wedding rings, and jewellery with images of Hindu gods. Alternatively, head to the northern side of the fort, where Jaisalmer's bustling Bhatia Market is sure to be of interest, and even in the unlikely scenario that you did find anything of interest, you can simply enjoy the atmosphere and the smell of spices.
