Malawi Weather, When to Go and Climate Information

Malawi has a sub-tropical climate with two fairly distinct seasons - a wet season and a dry season. Temperatures are largely moderated by altitude, with higher altitudes offering cooler weather for visitors, particularly in the evening.

Malawi's winter runs from May to October. This also happens to be the dry season. All in all, most tourists find these months the best time to visit this part of Africa. There are fewer restrictions on game viewing and, for those interested in hiking, it is easier to get out and about in the country's spectacular countryside.

Seasonal Climate Variations / When to Go

Daytime temperatures during this period tend to become cooler, although even at their coldest in June and July, average temperatures still remain relatively high at 21°C / 70°F. From mid-August, the climate starts to warm up again and in September and October, the weather can become very dry and windy.

Visitors planning to spend any amount of time in the highland areas of Malawi should be aware that temperatures there can feel a good deal cooler than elsewhere, particularly in the evening. This can often be a relief to those who want to escape the heat of lowland towns and cities, although it is best to be prepared with warm sweaters as night-time temperatures can fall to around 7°C / 47°F.

Malawi's summer runs from around November time to April. During this period, temperatures often reach 35°C / 90°F. This is also the wettest time of year. In fact, the vast majority of the rain falls during these months. A combination of rain and heat can make the weather feel very humid. It is worth noting that more rain falls on the higher plateaus and that travelling around the country can be made more difficult at this time.
