Apart from its glitzy casinos and gambling attractions, Reno is home to a number of impressive museums and art galleries. Particularly notable is the Nevada Historical Society on North Virginia Street, which stands alongside the university campus and close to the Lawlor Events Center, the Legacy Hall and the Fleischmann Planetarium.

Other important cultural attractions in Reno include the National Automobile Museum, with its vast collection of historic cars and vintage vehicles. Also worth a visit in Reno is the renowned Nevada Museum of Art, which comes with a number of well-stocked galleries and is just a stroll from the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts and the downtown branch of the Washoe County Library.

Founded in 1931, the Nevada Museum of Art features historical exhibitions and an interesting collection of contemporary art. Although more than 70 years old, the museum is now housed in a new building, which is a piece of artwork in itself.
Open hours: Wednesday, Friday to Sunday - 10:00 to 17:00, Thursday - 10:00 to 20:00

National Automobile Museum

Another one of Reno's museums, the National Automobile Museum is a must-see and offers quiet respite from the gambling. There are hundreds of ancient vehicles here, with gems such as James Dean's 1949 Mercury Coupe, from the cult movie Rebel Without a Cause, a gold-plated 1981 De Lorean LK Sport Coupe and a late 19th-century Philion Road Carriage. In all, there are over 200 vintage and classic autos here, including snazzy vehicles from the Harrah Collection.

Nevada Historical Society

The Nevada Historical Society is the oldest museum in the state - more than 100 years old - and features a huge collection of books on Nevada, as well as historical memorabilia. This is the best place to come and learn about Nevada's rich past.
