The city's art scene has never been better and continues to evolve, with innumerable galleries, studios and art museums being scattered around central Havana. Many gallery events are staged throughout the year, with the most up-to-date listings being found within the 'Arte en La Habana' - a free flyer usually available at the San Cristobal tourist office on the Plaza de San Francisco de Asis.

The Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes is the principal gallery in Havana and ranks amongst the Caribbean's very best art museums. It is easy to while away an entire day here, viewing the endless Greek ceramics and contemporary canvasses.

National Museum of Fine Arts (Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes)

The Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes reveals everything that you could wish to know about the heritage of Cuban art and is spread across three floors. This beautiful building is topped with a dome and is wonderfully maintained, being loaded with important art and sculpture exhibits, spread between two different sites (roughly two blocks apart) - the Coleccion de Arte Universal and the Coleccion de Arte Cubano. There are a host Cuban masters well represented here, including Rafael Blanco, Raul Martinez, Wifredo Lam and Amelia Pelaez.

Museum of Colonial Art (Museo de Arte Colonial)

The Museo de Arte Colonial is more of a modest museum for Havana, exhibiting decorative arts, paintings and colonial furniture. Housed within the former Palace of the Counts of Casa Bayona, the gallery resides in the bustling Cathedral Square and is also called home by some fine ceramics and ornaments. The palace itself dates from the early part of the 18th century and is a pleasure to wander with a guide.
