Re. Worth the long round-trip
If you enjoyed Caldeia das Sete Cidades then I also recommend Furnas. It is a little further than Caldeia das Sete Cidades, around 30 miles more so, but it is a wonderful lake and valley and there is a lovely little village there too.

Worth the long round-trip
Admittedly there isn't much to do in Vila Da Porto in terms of attractions and you usually have to head some way out of the area to find such things. We were never disappointed with getting on the road though, regardless of whether we stayed over for the night or drove back, and the geological formations at Caldeia das Sete Cidades were beautiful on an incredibly clear day. We are open to further suggestions as we will definitely be heading back.

Re. Portugal's highest mountain
Next time try it without a guide. It's perfectly safe and most people try it without a guide for the second time. Did you enjoy the nature reserve too? You could perhaps stay a little closer next time in Villa des Lages.

Portugal's highest mountain
We didn't hesitate to book a hire car for heading to Mount Pico in. This is on the UNESCO World Heritage list and is definitely a thing to 'do before you die'. The only complaint I would have is that the tour was a little overpriced.

Great caves inside of the volcano
I decide to check Pico off my list and love the caves there at Gruta das Torres. It was superb for be inside volcano and I'm not going to forget easy. I got some great photo of the lava tunnel. It's five kilometres long. I stayed at Madalena as it was far from Vila do Porto.
