Quetzaltenango Hotels and Accommodation

(Quetzaltenango / Xela, Western Highlands, Guatemala)

Quetzaltenango is set amid spectacular scenery high in the Sierra Madre mountains, surrounded by peaks and active volcanoes, and is a prime tourist hub with many diverse hotels and lodging options available. The city is popular with those wishing to learn Spanish and as a result there is no shortage of budget accommodation.

The streets lead from Central Park in all directions and this is where lodging of all types is located, from luxury hotels to budget accommodation. This part of Quetzaltenango is particularly convenient for the Xela Historic Centre and all of its attractions. It is quite possible to find accommodation in other parts of the city, but most of the action, cultural events, museums and other sights lie within the Old Quarter.

Where to Stay

In the central district, many upscale hotels have been converted from heritage buildings, giving a glimpse into the colonial history of Quetzaltenango, as well as providing luxury accommodation. In Zone 1, close to but not in the Xela Historic Centre, is a good choice of mid-range lodging with excellent facilities.

Further from the centre in the ever-expanding modern city are self-catering apartments, which can be rented very reasonably, while budget guest houses, B&Bs, hostels and family rooms are found all over the city.

For a luxurious experience to remember, the Hotel Pension Bonifaz is highly regarded in the city. Set in the centre of Quetzaltenango, within a lovely traditional building, the Pension Bonifaz combines comfortable accommodation with first-class service. The Hotel Villa Real Plaza resides in Zone 1, right next to the park, and is famous for its 60+ years as one of Quetzaltenango's best hotels.

The Hotel Casa Florencia is just a step from Central Park and is surrounded by coffee shops and restaurants. Also of note, the atmospheric Hotel Modelo is set in a beautiful old colonial house with thick white-washed walls and polished wooden floorboards.

The Hostal Casa Dona Mercedes lies right in the historic centre of Quetzaltenango, close to Central Park and various shopping facilities, and is a brightly painted traditional house with a 'boutique' feel about it, standing on an attractive cobbled street. Backpackers looking for cheap accommodation may like to consider the Black Cat, a newly opened hostel-style lodging option offering private rooms or beds in dorms, together with an onsite eatery.
